John Wesley Harper, the last of the sons of John Harper, a founder of the famous house, was a man of sweet and sympathetic temper. Graduating from Columbia in ’52 as class valedictorian, he became a clerk with Harper & Brothers, and in 1869 a member of the firm. In 1897 he was made President of the company. He was also an incorporator of the Lincoln National Bank.
