Among the marked traits of Gambrill’s character was a modest disbelief in his own fine powers scarcely suspected by the public or his associates, who could see in his excellent performance no reasons for such distrust. His professional skill has often served The Century well, and for many years he held acceptably its most confidential office. None of those who penetrated through his courteous reserve to the genuine and tender spirit it concealed could dream that the tinge of melancholy in his nature would deepen suddenly into the darkness that shadowed and saddened his end.
