Century Memorial

Henry Winthrop Gray, born in this city in 1839, was graduated from the New York University and entered business life first with his father’s firm of Griswold & Company in the China trade, and afterwards became a member of the Stock Exchange. A Democrat in his party affiliations, Mr. Gray took a considerable part in the political life of the city. He held at different times the posts of Park Commissioner, Fire Commissioner, and Special Commissioner of Jurors. After his retirement from active business he was entrusted, as Receiver, with the care of a number of extensive interests. He had been a member of The Century since 1860, and was also a member of the Metropolitan, Union, Union League, and Knickerbocker.
