William H. Tillinghast had been a member of The Century for thirty-six years, and was formerly one of the most frequent attendants at the Fifteenth Street home. He was a man of wide interests in the business world, and had been long connected with the railroads of the northern interior of the State, and also with the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company, as well as with the Metropolitan Trust Company and other financial institutions. He had also varied and intimate association with the organizations devoted to the advancement of art and letters, and was a gentleman of peculiar charm of disposition and attractiveness of character.
