Edward W. Hooper, of Boston, was an example of New England culture and civic fidelity. He passed from Harvard College and Law School to the Army of the Union in 1861, serving on the staff of General Saxton and contributing substantially to the solution of the difficult problem of dealing with the escaped slaves. As a lawyer he was distinguished in Boston for skill and success in the management of trusts,—not according to the modern misapplication of that term. He was for more than a score of years the Treasurer of Harvard University, to which institution his services were invaluable. He was one of the original Trustees of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, which owed much to his fidelity, sound judgment, and trained intelligence in the varied fields of art which it seeks to aid in cultivating.
