Century Memorial

Sir Frederick Orridge Macmillan, though his life was spent in London, always kept his name on the Century’s resident list. He had been a member since 1873, or longer than any other name upon that roll. It is many years since this distinguished publisher had visited the Club—perhaps not since pre-war days—but those of us who had met him abroad testified to his dynamic personality. Physically, he was a wonder to his intimates. Even at the age of eighty, rain or shine, he mounted his spirited horse each day for his turn in Hyde Park. He made himself do his daily dozen every morning, and took particular pride in the exploit. As a publisher, his associates recognized in him a master of his craft; who displayed, even when far advanced in years, the keenest of sense and instinct for that interesting profession.
