When Henry MacMahon Painter joined a club-house group, the cheerful conversation quickened. His stalwart and smiling presence brightened meetings of the Board or the Admissions Committee, in both of which he had been a useful member. Painter’s quick grasp at the humorous side of things was indeed as much a part of his personality in the sick-room as in the Club; he believed that exchange of lively talk with the adult patient was often as helpful to recovery as was medicine. An exceedingly busy practitioner in his chosen specialty, of which he stood easily at the head, his avocations took wide range. Music, collection of rare books and etchings, even architecture, absorbed mind and imagination in the seemingly rare leisure moments when he was not bringing babies into this world of ours.
