One of the very familiar faces in the Century was that of Richard Charles Rathborne. He somehow fitted into the Club’s every-day scene, knew nearly every one and had a friendly greeting for those whom he did not know. Serious and matter-of-fact in conversation, not a ready talker, it was the indefinable charm of Dick Rathborne’s personality that made his arrival at the corner dining-table or in the billiard-room invariably welcome. Club life often has its real foundations, less in the brilliant conversationalists than in these quiet every-day associates whose sympathetic companionship, even with only casual participation in the talk, is a restful pleasure.
