Century Memorial

Gen. J. Meredith Read was conspicuous for many years in military circles in this State, and afterwards in various diplomatic positions abroad. He was the United States Consul General for France and Algeria from 1869 to 1873, and United States Minister to Greece for several years thereafter. He was an active correspondent for the press, and acquired great prominence from the publicity attaching to his services in his various stations, and the hospitality he dispensed during his long continued residence in Europe.
