All of us who knew James F. Ruggles—and the list would include nearly every one who was a member before the removal of the Club to its present quarters—recognized in him one of the kindliest-natured gentlemen of our acquaintance. He was born, educated and lived all his life in this city; and from his accomplishments and his connection with the most refined and intellectual families here occupied a high and enviable position. The names of Samuel B. [Ruggles] and Philo T. Ruggles, his father and uncle, bring back to old New Yorkers pleasant memories of the social and professional life which now has undergone such a change that it is only a memory. But during all his life our friend was an honor to the name he bore, and has left a record of good deeds never excelled.
