James Earl Russell. [Born] 1864. Educator.
First Dean of Teachers College of Columbia University, he raised it from a small normal school to professional standing, with influence, through its graduates, upon the lives of millions of many races and lands. At his retirement in 1927, Teachers College graduates were conducting schools and determining educational policies throughout the world. He was alert to educational movements everywhere and both followed and led them. He was a trusted counselor to many leaders in education and philanthropy.
