Century Memorial

James R. Steers, a member of an old ship-building family, himself a lover of the sea, was for a number of years a practising lawyer at our Bar. He was a member of the first graduating class of 1853 in the College of the City of New York, then called the New York Free Academy. He belonged to the Seventh Regiment in the Civil War, and made one of the detachment detailed to guard the remains of President Lincoln, lying in state at the City Hall. In later life a traveller, and always a man of kindly disposition and gentle manner.
