Douglas Campbell, an able member of the bar in this city, was, as his name indicates, of Scotch descent, whose father was one of the distinguished jurists of the State. He was a man of scholarly tastes, especially interested in historical research, and made many valuable contributions to newspaper and magazine literature on these subjects. His most important work, entitled “The Puritan in Holland, England and America,” published but a short time before his death, attracted universal attention abroad and at home, and established his reputation as a brilliant historian. His style was clear and forcible, his investigations were thorough, and his patience in the accumulation of material remarkable. He was a courageous soldier in the war; and, although he suffered much from a lingering and distressing illness during the latter years of his life, his fortitude never forsook him; and he was always, in the circle of his friends, which was large, a brave and cheerful gentleman.
