James Renwick Brevoort will be remembered largely for his association with the National Academy of Design, which extended over more than half a century. Born on Manhattan Island [sic: Yonkers], and destined originally for architectural work, his bent towards painting led him, at the age of forty, to devote himself to the study of his art in Europe, where he painted with his friend, the elder George Inness. Landscapes were Brevoort’s favorite work, and his brush reproduced with equal vigor the Italian lakes, the English moorlands, and the hills of Westchester.
